Children’s Policy Council 

 

April 1, 2009

 

District Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell called the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. on April 1, 2009, at the Lowndes County Law Library.

 

The meeting was attended by Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell, District Judge, Gloria Jean Canty, SKIP, Inc.; James Collins, ABC Board; Sam Cooper, BancorpSouth Bank; Angela Daniel, All Kids; Renee Goodwin, Family Sunshine Center; Lakeisha Griffin, Helping Families Initiative; Katina James, First Years Child Day Care; Liletta Jenkins, Department of Children’s Affairs; Adrian Johnson, Parnell & Crum Law Firm; Rebecca Leadingham, Montgomery Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy; Katanga Mants, ACES-Lowndes County; Mary Anne Martin, Alabama Character Initiative; John Olsen, FDIC; Audrey Peterson, DHR; William Scott, U.S. Census Bureau; Gloria Simmons, Family Service Center of Lowndes County; Shakirah Tajuddin, DHR; Dan Therrien, Fort Deposit Library; Rachel Waters, DHR.

 

Judge Bozeman Lovell welcomed Council members and introduction of members and guests followed.  The members approved the minutes of the February 4, 2009, meeting. 

 

John Olsen with FDIC made a presentation on Money Smart for Young Adults.  He addressed the need for financial education in Lowndes County and several agencies committed to working with John to implement and to expand the use of this important program that is a free curriculum targeted for 12-20 year olds. 

 

Lakeisha Griffin, Director of the Lowndes County Helping Families Initiative, gave an update on the program’s progress. 

 

William Scott of the U.S. Census Bureau discussed the hiring of Lowndes County residents as 2010 census workers.  He also emphasized the importance of collecting accurate census data for the Black Belt region so that the area would receive their due portion of funding from the Federal Government.   

 

Audrey Peterson of the Lowndes County Department of Human Resources invited everyone to the Fraud Summit to be held at the Senior Citizen Center on May 6, 2009, from 9:30-12:00. 

 

Liletta Jenkins of the Department of Children’s Affairs discussed the success of the Legislative Meeting and also gave an update on the Annual Needs Assessment and the upcoming CPC Conference.
